Introduction

This publication on gender approach, discrimination and peace buil- ding is intended to illustrate the links between these different fields of action. These issues do not only affect relations between men and women, but also between young people and old, between ethnic or religious groups, people with different skin colour or sexual orientations.

The articles in this publication are very varied, at times even contra- dictory, and were written by people working in DR Congo, Cameroon and Sierra Leone.

Starting from the principle that “peace grows from within”, our aim is to illustrate the different forms of the struggle against discrimination in order to achieve a more united society. One that is capable of appre- ciating difference, as well as rallying the forces of peace, justice and sta- bility.

We believe that a network like ours, which works for a peace based on greater equity and justice, should be able to accept diverging and marginalised points of view to achieve fruitful dialogue. We share fun- damental values which should allow us to respect others in their diver- sity. We are not aiming for a unanimous position that would paralyse progress, but rather a frank exchange of a diversity of points of view.

The articles are based on the experience of their authors; these authors are representatives of CPS partner organisations, resource persons and peace workers. They describe situations involving discrimination and conflict, but often also give hints on how to overcome these situations. The writers express their obviously subjective points of view, that we have respected by making sure only hatred and ostracism were excluded.

The large number of contributions we received were a measure of the progress being made by our inter-African Civil Peace Service networks, and the links being forged between them. We trust this publication will also further this.

We hope you enjoy reading these articles and, as always, any feed- back is welcome.
