ACTION RESEARCH REPORT ON YOUTH VIOLENCE IN SIERRA LEONE

Youth violence in Sierra Leone is a multi-faceted issue, characterized by various forms such as physical, psychological, political, and economic violence. While the specific manifestations and triggers of violence may vary by region, there are common themes that reflect the broader national challenges faced by young people across the country.

Across Sierra Leone, youth violence is often described as “unrest” and includes criminal activities such as physical assaults, robbery, political confrontations, and gang-related activities. In some cases, it is linked to deeper societal issues like economic disparities, unemployment, and the misuse of political power. Violence also takes on social and gendered dimensions, with young men and women experiencing different triggers and consequences of violence.

The research conducted across Sierra Leone highlights regional differences in the manifestation and causes of violence, while also presenting solutions aimed at reducing the prevalence of youth violence. The findings of this research is intended to help the BftW CPS Network, government, community leaders and development partners in addressing the root causes of what most people describe as a menace to society.
