BftW-CPS sustains capacity strengthening of peace workers in the Mano River Union through the Community of Practice Initiative

By Abdul Kaprr Dumbuya

The Community of Practice (CoP) was established in the Mano River Union (Sierra Leone and Liberia) of the Civil Peace Service (CPS) Program by the Support Team of Bread for the World (BftW) in Germany.
CoP is a structured platform with members drawn from CPS partner organizations, designed to share with other peace workers and local stakeholders’ experiences, best practices, and lessons learned from their peacebuilding work.
The team also provides local technical expertise and capacities within the network to strengthen its partners as well as other local development collaborators without recourse to hiring international consultants.

KEY COMPONENTS:

DO NO HARM

The “Do No Harm” (DNH) approach is a guiding principle in peacebuilding and humanitarian work that emphasizes minimizing unintended negative impacts and maximizing positive contributions to peace. Within the CPS Network in Sierra Leone, the approach provides a practical and ethical framework for ensuring that interventions contribute to social cohesion rather than inadvertently fueling tensions or divisions.

MEDIATION

The Mediation Approach is a structured, participatory, and non-violent method of resolving conflicts through dialogue and mutual understanding. It aligns with the core mission of CPS — to strengthen local capacities for peace, prevent violence, and promote social cohesion at community and institutional levels.

OPEN SPACE TECHNOLOGY

Open Space Technology (OST) is a participatory facilitation method designed to empower groups to address complex issues through open dialogue, collaboration, and self-organization. Within the Civil Peace Service (CPS) Network in Sierra Leone, OST serves as a vital approach for fostering inclusive participation, ownership, and collective problem-solving among diverse actors working toward peacebuilding and social cohesion.

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

Knowledge Management is a vital component of the CPS Network’s work, as it ensures that lessons, experiences, and best practices in peacebuilding are systematically captured, shared, and used to strengthen future interventions. In a context marked by post-conflict recovery, social cohesion challenges, and the need for sustainable peacebuilding strategies, Knowledge Management enhances the effectiveness, coordination, and learning capacity of CPS partner organizations.
