While the specific manifestations and triggers of violence vary by region, common themes reflect broader national challenges faced by young people across the country.

In Sierra Leone, youth violence is often referred to as “unrest” and includes criminal activities such as physical assaults, theft, political clashes, and gang-related activities. In some cases, it is linked to deeper societal issues such as economic disparities, unemployment, and abuse of political power. The violence also has social and gender-based dimensions, with young men and women facing different triggers and consequences.

Research conducted in Sierra Leone highlights regional differences in the manifestations and causes of violence, while offering solutions aimed at reducing the prevalence of youth violence. The findings of this research are intended to support the BftW CPS network, the government, community leaders, and development partners in addressing the root causes of what many describe as a threat to society.

For more details, please download the full report.

Download the PDF

In Sierra Leone, youth violence is a multifaceted problem characterized by various forms of physical, psychological, political, and economic violence.
