A two–day Civil Peace Service –CPS – Peace Advocates and Branch Coordinators Planning and Learning Workshop, (April 3-4, 2023) took place at the YMCA National Headquarters in Monrovia. The Liberia YMCA is a partner organization of the Civil Peace Service (CPS).

Implemented by the YMCA of Liberia, the training brought together, YMCA Peace Advocates, Branch Coordinators, and youths from YMCA branches around the country.

Topics discussed included Conflict Escalation-factors that affect conflict escalation, the different ways conflict escalates, the different ways conflict can be de-escalated, Hate speech and negative use of social media, actions to address Hate speech.

Participants also discussed peace building and actions to address and prevent conflict, including advocacy and action planning./div>

Following the Peace Advocates and Branch Coordinators Planning and Learning Workshop, the YMCA also held a Gender Intensive Training in rural Montserrado County. Held from April 10-13, 2023, the training was intended to conduct certificate – level gender mainstreaming and safe guarding training for 20 persons, 9 females and 11 males.

The training enhanced participants’ knowledge with gender and power related concepts as they become change promoters and youth trainers in their communities. It also introduced participants to learner’s friendly presentation, research and interdisciplinary approach in understanding and taking policy actions toward promoting gender sensitive programs.

The training was conducted by CPS seconded Professional, Antje Schulz and co-facilitated by CPS-YMCA Project Coordinator Decontee George. Participants were recruited from four counties, Margibi, Bong, Nimba and Montserrado Counties, between ages 17-29 years old.

The training was organized by Civil Peace Service in partnership with Bread for the World – BftW. The CPS is a German-funded program aiming at preventing violence and promoting peace in crisis zones, working with marginalized groups to reduce fragmentation in society.
