Civil Peace Service (CPS) Partners from four African countries, held three days of Coordinators Peer Learning Meeting in Monrovia from July 5-7, 2022.
CPS Coordinators from Cameroon, DR Congo, Liberia, and Sierra Leone during the meeting shared experiences, challenges, approaches, strategies, and success stories of CPS partners.
They also shared experiences on empowering young people in their various countries to promote peaceful elections. During the opening program, key actors in the areas of conflict transformation, election coordination, peace building and national cohesion in Liberia participated in panel discussions and exchanges with participants.

Their presentations included: Overview of the Liberian Context: Challenges and prospect of elections violence in Liberia – Factors and key players that stimulate election violence in Liberia; The role of the Liberia elections coordinating committee in promoting violence free elections; Strategies to address root causes of youth instigated elections violence; Violence free elections: a pillar for promoting national cohesion Challenges and prospects and the role of Social Media in jeopardizing peaceful elections-Approaches to counteracting negative social media information disseminations.
On Challenges and prospect of Elections Violence in Liberia – factors and key players that stimulate election violence in Liberia. Professor Debey Sayndee of the Kofi Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation – Liberia, identified the issues of governance, susceptibility of youth, retrenching conflict through marginalization of land as well as access and animosities associated with land, as key factors associated with youth violence.

On the role of the elections coordinating committee in promoting violence free elections, Counsellor. Oscar Bloh of the Election Coordinating Committee in Liberia, an organization that observes electoral processes in Liberia said basic social services are not functioning properly thus making youth exposed to violence. “Why can’t they participate in violence”? Mr. Lancedell Matthews of the New Africa Research Development Agency, NARDA, a partner organization of CPS -Liberia Partners, discussing a summary of CPS Liberia Partners contribution to addressing youth election violence and promoting social cohesion in Liberia: approaches, challenges, stories and way forward said CPS Liberia Partners are working with different groups among different partners in peace building to include literacy program for women.

CPS Partners next intervention he said, will be elections observation, before, during and after elections, post elections dialogue, as well as building a critical consciousness of a critical masses and targeting the voters and conscientizing them.
Earlier, CPS Liberia Partners Network Coordinator, Mr. Joseph D. Howard said, CPS Partners were very happy to be at the meeting to promote peace among young people.
Nothing that and when one speaks about war, life is not very interesting, nothing that partners are working on different approaches toward peace.

A representative of Agiamondo, said his organization supports the work of partner organizations towards peace and Agiamondo has excellent partnership with Bread for the World (BftW). He encouraged CPS partner organizations to make maximum use of the partnership.

Other participants at the program came from Liberia Council of Churches – the governance institution that oversees churches in Liberia, Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) – a youth organization operating in Liberia, Kofi Annan Institute of Conflict Transformation (KAICT), Mano River Union Office near Monrovia and Center for Media Studies and Peace Building (CEMESP).
