Empowering Communities to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls in Kambia

Self Help and Development Everywhere Sierra Leone (SHADE SL), with support from Bread for the World Civil Peace Service (BftW-CPS), continues to strengthen community-based efforts to protect women and girls through leadership development, rights awareness, and advocacy training in Kambia District, North-West Sierra Leone. As part of the project, “Strengthening Community Protection and Capacity to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls in Kambia District,” a one-day training was held on 19 June 2026 at the UNIDO Youth Growth Centre in Kambia.

The training brought together 40 participants drawn from eleven communities across Magbema, Gbinleh, and Dixon Chiefdoms, including women, girls, boys, youth representatives, and members of the media. The initiative aimed to build local leadership capacities and empower community members to champion gender equality, protection, and the prevention of violence against women and girls.

Through interactive learning sessions, participants enhanced their understanding of leadership principles, gender rights and responsibilities, and the various forms and causes of violence affecting women and girls. Special attention was given to Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and the social and cultural factors that contribute to discrimination and abuse.

The training also equipped participants with practical advocacy skills to support community-led actions for protecting women and girls and promoting peaceful, inclusive societies. By strengthening awareness and encouraging collective responsibility, the programme is helping communities become more proactive in preventing violence and safeguarding the rights and dignity of all citizens.

SHADE SL remains committed to working with local stakeholders and communities to advance gender justice, strengthen protection mechanisms, and create safer environments where women and girls can thrive free from violence and discrimination.
