CPS, YMCA Working to Promote Peaceful Elections in 2023

As Liberians go to the polls on October 10, 2023, the Civil Peace Service – CPS and the Liberia YMCA have embarked on several initiatives and programs aimed at voters’ education, election preparedness, the promotion of peace, non-violence during elections and the reduction in hate speech among others.

These activities and programs will target youth groups, schools, motorcyclists, religious leaders, stakeholders and communities. According to Decontee George, the YMCA with support from CPS will hold a Civic Competence and Election Preparedness Training for 110 persons in four counties to begin on June 1, 2023. Other activities under this initiative will include voters’ education in Bong and Nimba Counties, with Peace Advocates conducting the awareness, targeting marketers, schools and motorcyclists.

It will also target religious leaders on non-violent elections and voters – their responsibilities and roles with expert trainers and co-facilitators targeting 120 persons in 4 counties 30 persons per county in Montserrado, Bong, Margibi and Nimba Counties.

Another activity planned by the YMCA is a Youth Peace Actor Summit targeting political parties and youth groups from the fifteen counties for 500 persons. This will include symposiums and parades, participants guaranteeing to promote peace at all costs.

Following the activities, it is expected that citizens will know their rights as voters and the qualities in the candidates. It will also encourage eligible citizens to turn out and vote and remain peaceful.
